WORLD BOOK DAY AUTHOR VISITS NOW OPEN

Calling all year 3-6 teachers! Kate would love to come to your school for a fun, interactive and performative reading, followed by a creative writing workshop. Sessions support Key Stage 2 English objectives, including reading for enjoyment, vocabulary development, and creative writing. Please see a breakdown below:

Option 1) Assembly or class reading (30 mins)

A lively and engaging author-led reading session introducing pupils to Out of Line.

The session includes:

  • Live reading of selected poems
  • Join-in audience participation and group responses
  • Short discussion moments exploring humour and meaning
  • Behind-the-scenes insight into how poems are created
  • Q&A with the author
  • Book signing and photos

Aims:

  • Encourage reading for pleasure and enjoyment of language
  • Show that poetry can be fun, accessible, and relatable
  • Engage reluctant readers in a low-pressure, inclusive way
  • Demonstrate how humour and storytelling create meaning

Suitable for:

Whole-school or whole-year assemblies depending on the size and space of the venue. (Years 3–6)

Option 2) Creative writing workshop (up to 60 mins)

A fun, dynamic and interactive session that explores poem interpretation, storytelling and writing.

  • Live reading of selected poems (5-10 mins)
  • Discussion on where ideas come from? (5-10 mins)
  • Sprinkling magic into the poem - eg, the twist, humour or fun (5-10 mins)
  • Developing the rhymes (5-10 mins)
  • Independent writing (10-15 mins)
  • Sharing (10-15 mins)
  • Book signing and photos

Aims:

  • Understand how a poem or story is formed and developed
  • Explore creativity, humour, and surprise as tools to engage and entertain an audience
  • Develop vocabulary and word choice, understanding how language creates meaning, rhythm, and impact
  • Learn how twists, exaggeration, and playful ideas can bring writing to life
  • Build confidence in writing, sharing, and speaking within a supportive group environment
  • Engage with poetry in a low-pressure, accessible way, supporting reluctant readers and writers
